Salamanca is golden stone at sunset: the Plaza Mayor, the two cathedrals and Spain's oldest university form a World Heritage old town best savoured on foot. Yet the city presides over a vast, sparsely populated province of dehesa pastures, sierras and hill villages that visitors usually miss for lack of transport.
With no commercial airport offering regular flights, Salamanca is reached by train or by road — and getting around the province afterwards demands a car: buses to La Alberca or the mountain villages are few and far between. Where can I collect the car in Salamanca?
We have offices in the city centre and at the railway station, very convenient if you arrive from Madrid. There is also a pick-up point at Plasencia station, useful for routes continuing into Extremadura.
Do I need a car if I'm only visiting the city?
Not for the old town: everything is walkable. A car comes into its own from day two, when you want to discover La Alberca, Ciudad Rodrigo or the Arribes — destinations with very little public transport.
