Car hire in Almería

Almería is Europe's most arid province and one of its most singular: the Tabernas Desert, where the great Westerns were filmed, sits alongside the unspoilt coves of Cabo de Gata and the Alcazaba, the largest Moorish fortress after the Alhambra. Its airport and railway station connect it well, but the territory itself calls for wheels.
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, the province's main draw, has barely any public transport: Mónsul, Los Genoveses and the salt flats can only be reached by car. With pick-up at the airport, the railway station, the city centre and even in Mojácar or Roquetas de Mar, you can start your route from wherever your trip takes you.

- Cabo de Gata has no useful bus routes: without a car you miss Mónsul, Los Genoveses and white villages such as La Isleta del Moro.
- Six pick-up points spread across the province: airport, railway station, central Almería, Mojácar and Roquetas de Mar.
- Distances are deceptive: the Tabernas Desert, the Mojácar coast and the capital are each more than an hour's drive apart.

Frequently asked questions
Can Cabo de Gata be visited without a car?
It is very difficult: bus services are scarce and do not reach the main beaches. Access to Mónsul and Los Genoveses is via a track from San José, and in summer it pays to start early as parking is restricted.
Where do I collect the car if I am staying in Mojácar or Roquetas?
No need to go to the capital: there are pick-up points in both Mojácar and Roquetas de Mar, as well as at the airport, the railway station and central Almería. Choose the one nearest your accommodation when booking.
