The beauty of hiring a car in Barcelona lies not in using it within the city, but in having it ready to leave it. 🚦 Driving in Barcelona — what you need to know

Rondas LEZ : the Low Emission Zone covers almost the whole city Monday to Friday, 7 am–8 pm; recent hire cars comply with no paperwork needed.
Green zone : on-street parking is residents-only across much of the centre: use public car parks.
Tolls : many Catalan motorways are now free (AP-7), but the C-32 and tunnels still charge.

Getting around

Within Barcelona, forget the car: the metro and walking are unbeatable, and parking in the centre is expensive and scarce. Save the car for your getaway days.
If you're staying in the centre, find a public car park near your hotel for the city days — or better still, pick up the vehicle on the very day you set off on your road trip.
Collecting the car at El Prat airport is usually the most convenient option if you arrive by plane; if you're already in the city, the offices near Sants or Plaça Espanya put you straight onto the exits towards the coast and the interior.

When to go

From May to June and in September-October you get the best balance: mild temperatures, inviting seas and Costa Brava roads without the peak-August traffic. Summer is glorious but crowded, especially at the coves; an early start pays off. Winter, mild and bright, is ideal for Montserrat and the Penedès wineries, with the city far quieter.

Is it worth hiring a car if I'm only visiting Barcelona itself?

Honestly, no: the centre is best enjoyed on foot and by metro. The car makes sense as soon as you plan at least one day out — to Montserrat, the Costa Brava or the Penedès — where the freedom from timetables changes everything.

Where is the best place to pick up a hire car in Barcelona?

If you land at El Prat, collect it there and skip the transfer. If you're already staying in the city, a central office on the day of your getaway usually works out easier: you save yourself unnecessary nights of parking.

Is parking easy in the Costa Brava villages and at Montserrat?

In high season an early start pays off: the car parks beside the most famous coves fill up quickly. At Montserrat and in villages like Begur there are signposted parking areas at the entrance; arriving before mid-morning is the best strategy.
