Lleida (Lérida) is too often just a stop between Barcelona and Saragossa, and that is a mistake: the Seu Vella dominates the city from its hill, the surrounding orchards produce half of Spain's sweet fruit, and above all it is the gateway to the Catalan Pyrenees, the Val d'Aran and landscapes such as the Congost de Mont-rebei.
The high-speed train drops you at the station in little over an hour from Barcelona, but from there the territory is car country: the Pyrenean valleys, the Montsec and the Costers del Segre wineries have sparse bus connections. Is it worth hiring in Lleida rather than Barcelona for the Pyrenees?
Yes, if you arrive by high-speed train: you skip the drive out of Barcelona and its traffic, and start your route already halfway to the valleys. Offices in mid-sized cities also tend to offer quicker pick-up.
Do I need a special car to drive up to the Val d'Aran?
The main roads are well surfaced and an ordinary car is fine in summer. In winter it is wise to book a vehicle with suitable tyres and carry snow chains, which are compulsory when snow covers the road.
