Car hire in Naples

Naples is pure intensity: the bustle of Spaccanapoli, pizza in its birthplace, Vesuvius ever present at the back of the bay. But the city is also the launch pad for one of Italy's richest areas for day trips: Pompeii, the Amalfi Coast, the Phlegraean Fields and inland Campania.

Within Naples a car is a hindrance; outside it, a liberation. The strategy that works best is to collect the vehicle at Naples-Capodichino airport, around 20 minutes from the centre, and use it for the escapes: the archaeological sites, the inland villages and the panoramic roads that the Circumvesuviana train doesn't cover comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

Is it a good idea to drive in central Naples?

Frankly, no: dense traffic, camera-enforced ZTLs and difficult parking. Use the car to leave the city and explore the centre on foot or by metro; you'll save both time and stress.

Can I drive along the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, the SS163 is fine for ordinary cars, though narrow and very busy in summer. Set off early, avoid August if you can, and pinpoint the paid car parks in Positano and Amalfi before you arrive.
