Car hire in Bergamo

Bergamo is two cities in one: the Città Alta, a medieval citadel walled by Venice (the ramparts are a World Heritage Site) perched on a hill, and the modern, commercial lower town, linked by a century-old funicular. Piazza Vecchia and the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore alone justify the visit.

Its Orio al Serio airport, one of Europe's great low-cost hubs, is for many travellers the real gateway to Lombardy. Collecting a car there, around 10 minutes from the centre, opens up the lakes of Como and Iseo, the Alpine valleys and the cities of the Po plain without relying on trains that require a change in Milan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive up to Bergamo's Città Alta?

Access is restricted at certain times and on certain days, and parking spaces are scarce. The practical option is to park in the lower town and take the funicular up — which is part of the charm of the visit anyway.

Do I need anything special to drive towards the lakes or the Alps?

The lakeside roads are narrow and winding but well surfaced. If you're travelling in winter towards the high valleys, check the car is fitted with winter tyres or carries chains, which are a seasonal legal requirement on many Alpine routes.
