One-way hire, also known as drop-off hire, lets you collect the vehicle from one office and leave it at a different one, saving you kilometres, time and a fair amount of logistical hassle.

For example, you collect the vehicle in Madrid and return it in Barcelona, or you pick it up in Lisbon and drop it off in Porto. The company takes care of repositioning the car back to its original office, and that extra work is what usually generates an added cost.
The one-way fee
As this is an additional service for the company, most apply a surcharge known as a "one-way fee" or drop-off charge. Its amount mainly depends on the distance between the two offices and on the hire company itself, so it can vary quite a bit from case to case.
When it can be free of charge
In some cases, especially when both offices are within the same area or country, the drop-off charge may not apply at all. It isn't a fixed rule: each company sets its own zones and conditions, so it's worth checking when you make the booking.
Crossing borders with the car
If your one-way route involves crossing from one country to another, bear in mind that many companies require prior authorisation to take the vehicle out of the country of collection. This authorisation usually comes with its own conditions (permitted countries, required documents, possible extra cost), so it's something to confirm before you travel, not on the day.
